George Washington’s Mount Vernon Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Celebrating Privately Funded $40 Million Mansion Revitalization

Event on December 10 Features Mansion Tours With Experts, Including First Look at the Newly Restored Washingtons’ Bedchamber

Mount Vernon, VA, November 24, 2025 – As the nation prepares to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, George Washington’s Mount Vernon invites members of the news media to a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the $40 million Mansion Revitalization Project. All first and second-floor Mansion rooms will be reopened to the public, the first time since January 2024. This privately funded initiative is Mount Vernon’s birthday gift to America, preserving the Mansion’s original fabric while reinforcing its structure.

Following the ceremony, press will be offered guided tours led by Mount Vernon’s experts, providing behind-the-scenes insight into the renovation process, scientific discoveries, and historical findings that informed the restoration.

This unprecedented historic preservation project includes comprehensive structural stabilization, refinished exterior siding and paint, and meticulous restoration of iconic interior spaces. Among the most notable is the newly restored Washingtons’ Bedchamber, returned as closely as possible to its documented 1799 appearance through groundbreaking research, conservation science, and craftsmanship. The appearance and interpretation of all Mansion rooms have been enhanced, including the Central Passage, the Little Parlor, and the Old Chamber. The second-floor south addition was re-plastered and painted with colors accurate to the period, based on microscopic paint analysis. The spaces are now wallpapered, following groundbreaking new research.

The project ensures that visitors for generations can experience George Washington’s home as he knew it and learn about the founding of America and democracy. A comprehensive overview of this multi-year revitalization project is available here.
