About the Vaughan Lobby

The Vaughan Lobby is located just outside The General's Canteen and The Shops at Mount Vernon. This welcoming space includes seating and restrooms for guests.

Set into the floor is the Samuel Vaughan Plan of Mount Vernon. Vaughan, an English merchant and philanthropist, visited Mount Vernon in 1787 during a 1,400-mile journey along the East Coast. While there, he sketched the Mansion and grounds and later produced a finished plan, which he sent to George Washington as a gift. Washington thanked him, noting that it “describes with accuracy the house, walk and shrubs,” though he observed a few minor inaccuracies—including the omission of mounds at the west end of the Bowling Green and plantings that would have interrupted the westward vista.
