Judge Harlan

1896

Justice John Marshall Harlan (1833–1911) served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1877 to 1911. A former slaveholder turned staunch defender of civil rights, he advocated for equal protection under the law. His visit to Mount Vernon is briefly described by Harrison Howell Dodge, Mount Vernon's long-time superintendent, in his 1932 book Mount Vernon, its owner and its story.

Justice Harlan of the Supreme Court in 1896 brought Lord Chief Justice Russell of England. Harlan planted a white oak and Russell an English walnut.
