1898
Ida Saxton McKinley (1847–1907), wife of President William McKinley, served as First Lady from 1897 to 1901. She visited Mount Vernon in 1898, as described by Harrison Howell Dodge, Mount Vernon's long-time superintendent, in his 1932 book Mount Vernon, its owner and its story.
“During the Council of 1898, President and Mrs. McKinley came. It distressed all present to note the frail physique of Mrs. McKinley. We could not but admire her bravery and enthusiasm. She was actually carried from room to room, but withal was cheerfully intent on seeing everything of interest.”
