Dolley Payne Todd Madison was one of the First Ladies of the United States (1809-1817). Madison was invited to visit Mount Vernon in 1805, prior to becoming First Lady, but was unable to go. She later visited Mount Vernon in June of 1845, after her time as First Lady, in the company of President and Mrs. Polk.
