Commodore George Dewey (1837–1917) was a U.S. naval officer best known for his decisive victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War, which made him a national hero. He later became the only person in U.S. history to hold the rank of Admiral of the Navy. He visited Mount Vernon in 1894, reported by Harrison Howell Dodge, Mount Vernon's long-time superintendent, in his 1932 book Mount Vernon, its owner and its story.
