Abigail Smith Adams was the wife of John Adams, the second President of the United States, and the mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth. A sharp intellect and prolific letter writer, she is remembered for her strong advocacy of women’s rights and her famous plea to “remember the ladies” in early American government. She visited Mount Vernon with Martha Washington in 1800, after George Washington's death.
