Mount Vernon was closed to the public from March 14 to June 21 to help combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The closure had a tremendous impact on our operating budget. We are privately owned and operated by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. 75% of our annual revenue is derived from ticket, food, and retail sales. March to May was Mount Vernon's busiest season where we would normally welcome 5,000 - 8,000 guests daily.
However, we kept our mission strong; we maintained staff to ensure the estate and its collection of objects were properly maintained. We also expanded our distance education programs during this time.
In order to fund these operations, we dipped into our rainy-day funds. If you have the capacity to help, we have several ways you can support our mission and staff during this difficult year.
