About 50 men, most of them seated, are in a large meeting room. Most are focused on the five men standing in the center of the room. The tallest of the five is laying a document on a table.

Did you know that George Washington did not sign the Declaration of Independence? He was Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, and was with the army in New York City. He heard the news a few days later on July 9th. He had been commander-in-chief for a little over a year, and had been hoping that Congress would declare independence for quite some time!

The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in American history, and it will be turning 250 years old in 2026. Join the Youth Programs team to learn more about the Declaration, the people who signed it, Washington's response to it, and why it matters today. You can also test your knowledge with our Declaration of Independence true or false board.
