Join Author Robert F. Weinhagen for a sneak peek into Alexandria's most beautiful historic homes

In this special presentation for the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon, he will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Old Town Style -- from its original vision and editorial framework to the selection and presentation of more than 41 remarkable homes.

Drawing on firsthand research and conversations with homeowners, he will share memorable stories, insights, and discoveries that illuminate the character of Old Town’s architectural heritage.

Through both the book and this presentation, Mr. Weinhagen reflects on the rarity of intact period homes -- not only in Alexandria, but across America -- and makes a compelling case for thoughtful, forward-looking stewardship to ensure that these extraordinary places, and the stories they hold, endure for generations to come.

About the Book

Old Town Style showcases Alexandria’s historic homes through rich stories and stunning photos, blending past and present in a tribute to timeless architecture and design.

Step beyond Old Town Alexandria’s historic brick facades and gas lamps to discover a world of timeless architectural beauty in Old Town Style. This comprehensive volume showcases over 40 extraordinary period homes, from a rustic Colonial Sea Captain’s house to an elegant Federal townhome and a transformed 18th-century bank turned private residence. Many featured homes are published here for the first time, offering an intimate look into Alexandria’s best-preserved historic treasures.

Blending personal renovation stories, decorating insights, and rich historical context, the book provides lasting design inspiration while emphasizing architectural preservation. Acclaimed photographer Erik Kvalsvik’s vibrant full-color images reveal diverse interior styles—from Jacobean and early American to mid-century modern—and highlight intricate exterior details. Intimate glimpses of secret walled gardens add enchantment.

About the Author

Robert F. Weinhagen, Jr. -- lawyer, author, collector, bibliophile, raconteur, and devoted coffee connoisseur -- has been a defining presence in Old Town Alexandria for more than four decades. He has served on the Board of the Historic Alexandria Foundation (HAF) since 2001 and became its President in 2024.

Originally from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Mr. Weinhagen graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota, where he earned degrees in economics and history and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, before receiving his law degree from Harvard Law School. He spent his distinguished career on Capitol Hill as Senior Counsel in the Office of the Legislative Counsel in the U.S. House of Representatives -- the nonpartisan office responsible for drafting legislation for both sides of the aisle. His work spanned banking law, House Ethics, House Rules, and the federal budget process, where he became known for his precision, speed, discretion, and an exceptional ability to craft creative solutions to complex legislative challenges.

As President of HAF, Mr. Weinhagen is a thoughtful and effective advocate for historic preservation. He advances a guiding philosophy that preservation is, at its best, a dynamic partnership -- between past and present, civic leaders and citizens, and those who design and build alongside those who dwell. His current priorities include strengthening dialogue with local officials to balance development with the long-term stewardship of Old Town’s historic fabric, while fostering a deeper preservation ethic among homeowners, tradespeople, and the broader community.

Mr. Weinhagen is the author of Assume Nothing: A Manual for Buyers of American and English Antique Furniture (1993) and the newly released Old Town Style: Inside Alexandria’s Most Beautiful Historic Homes (2025).
