Hear Music From Washington's World

Foundations of American Music is a 30-minute interactive music presentation highlighting the diverse musical traditions of 18th century America.

From the colonial battlefield to George Washington's own parlor, learn about the music that shaped the America's ear. The program ends with a chance for participants to join in and make music together.

While he never played an instrument himself, music was an important part of George Washington's world. He once wrote, "Nothing is more agreeable, and ornamental, than good music."

He encountered many different styles of music throughout his travels as a surveyor, military officer, as president, and at home at Mount Vernon.
