Demonstrations by Our Resident Blacksmiths

During George Washington's life, the blacksmith's craft was vital for upkeep around the Mount Vernon plantation and to the founding father's business endeavors.

At the blacksmith shop, you'll learn about the unique art of forging iron from a skilled blacksmith fashioning items right here on the estate. See firsthand how smiths use the forge to make farming equipment and building supplies like nails and hinges.

In addition to the regular tasks of making and repairing tools, Washington challenged his smiths to create an innovative plow he had designed.

After your visit, stop by The Shops at Mount Vernon to see our blacksmiths' creations available for purchase.
