Learn About George Washington's Leadership

The Navy and Marine Corps were created by the Continental Congress in the fall of 1775. Sailors and Marines served alongside the Continental Army, and had their own unique missions that contributed to American victory.

As commander in chief of the Continental Army, George Washington worked closely with the Navy and Marines throughout the war to coordinate military operations and supplies. On a few occasions, he even led the Marines in battle.
