Join us for a day of learning and exploration focused on George Washington, Nebraska history, and educational resources.
The program features a scholar talk, a behind-the-scenes tour of Nebraska State Historical Society collections, and opportunities to learn about resources available through NSHS and the George Washington Teacher Institute, with time to explore the museum at your own pace.

Registration Requirements
Who can register?
- Teachers MUST teach in a formal K-12 classroom or school setting.
- The workshop is limited to 30 teachers.
- A waitlist will be available if registration meets full capacity.

Meet the Speaker
Michael M. Belding III
Michael M. Belding III (“Mickey”) is the National Register Coordinator at the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), a department of the Nebraska State Historical Society.
His primary responsibilities in this role are to conduct preliminary evaluations of properties’ eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); organize meetings of the state board that reviews nominations to the NRHP; and assist nomination preparers in all phases of the process—research, writing, presentation, and submittal to the National Park Service.
Outside of work, Mickey continues to work toward a doctorate in history from Iowa State University. His dissertation grapples with the Civil War-era politics of converting the wild “prairie peninsula” of tallgrasses into the domesticated “corn belt” of maize.
Meet the Educator
Samantha McCarville
Samantha McCarville is the Curator of Education at the Nebraska State Historical Society. As a former classroom teacher, Samantha specialized in K-12 museum education. Her academic interests include children’s history and 19th-century U.S. history.
Samantha earned her B.A. in history and international affairs from Morningside University and later studied American History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Throughout graduate school, Samantha worked as a preschool teacher. Passionate about public education, Samantha joined Teach for America.
Through Teach for America, she taught high school social studies in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, before moving back to Nebraska to become a middle school social studies teacher at Grand Island Public Schools. Samantha currently lives in Beatrice. In her spare time, Samantha enjoys playing video games, gardening, and having dance parties with her two-year-old niece.
