Washington spends a clear day at Mount Vernon. In Massachusetts, John Adams (writing as “Novanglus”) responds to the writings of "Massachusettensis," a loyalist. Adams defends the colonies' opposition to taxation without representation: We had considered ourselves as connected with Great-Britain, but we never thought parliament the supreme legislature over us.
