Photos: Shoring Installation and Framing Repair

Phase 2

With the successful completion of Phase 2 of the Mansion Revitalization Project, George Washington’s iconic home has undergone some critical preservation work.

During this phase, Mount Vernon's Preservation team prepared for the installation of more cantilevered shoring—a critical temporary support system designed and installed by Wolfe House & Building Movers to allow safe access for foundation repairs.

Next, they undertook an array of structural and restoration tasks. Masons carefully removed non-original 1930s brick piers and brick sills from the cellar. Preservation carpenters installed new wooden sills at key structural points and made preparations for the installation of the new HVAC system.

This milestone marks significant progress in the multi-phase effort to preserve and protect the Mansion for future generations, while restoring features of the cellar that reflect its 18th-century character.
