In honor of our nation's veterans, Mount Vernon admits FREE all active duty, former, or retired military personnel on Veterans Day. 

Military service members may pick up their free tickets upon arrival. Free tickets do not extend to service members' family members or guests.

Place a Floral Tribute

All day, veterans are invited to place a floral tribute at the Tomb, provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Meet General George Washington and Dr. James Craik

Hear a speech by the first commander in chief at 1 p.m. in the Robert H. and Clarice Smith Auditorium.

Then, listen to Dr. James Craik explain his role as the man responsible for the health of George Washington, his family and guests, and the hired and enslaved laborers on Mount Vernon’s farms. 

Learn About Music & History

Enjoy a special music program for Veterans Day at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on the bowling green. Hear patriotic medleys, learn a brief history of Veterans Day, and participate in a Q&A session with Mount Vernon's fifer. In case of rain, the program will be held inside the greenhouse in the upper garden.

In the Robert H. and Clarice Smith Auditorium, see a choral performance by the Harmony Heritage Singers at 11 a.m.

Sample Free Fresh Baked Bread (Veterans Only)

As a thank you to our veterans, visit the Half Crown Bakehouse all day on the 12-acre field for a complimentary quarter-slice of traditional 18th-century bread with salt pork butter. 

While supplies last. Coupons for this free sample can be picked up upon arrival along with the free admission tickets for veterans.

Explore the Creation of Military Branches at the Discovery Station

Stop by the Discovery Station all day in the historic area to learn about the daily lives of sailors and Marines, and George Washington's role in leading them, during the 250th anniversary of the creation of the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

Touch some of the objects they might have packed in their sea chest.

Join Story Time to Uncover a Unique Patriot Soldier

At 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the bowling green, listen to a reading of Cloaked in Courage: Uncovering Deborah Sampson, Patriot Soldier, and discover how a woman enlisted and fought in the Continental Army.
