July 2, 1776

In Philadelphia, Congress formally adopts Richard Henry Lee’s resolution, declaring the 13 colonies independent. Tomorrow, they plan to “take into their farther consideration the declaration on independence.”New York waits for battle. Five large British warships move through the Narrows. American officers fear an attack on the forts, yet soldiers show cheerfulness, almost inviting the enemy forward. Washington orders the army to sleep on its arms.
