Make the Historic Journey to Mount Vernon

Traveling on the Potomac River was often the preferred method of moving goods between Mount Vernon and Alexandria in George Washington's time. In the 19th century the Potomac River teemed with ships bringing locals and out-of-town visitors to Washington’s historic estate. Many famous visitors have arrived by boat, including Abraham Lincoln in 1862 and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The picturesque cruise was enjoyable, safer, and more convenient than the perilous roads on the 15-mile journey from Washington, D.C.  Today, visitors continue this historic tradition with modern vessels and enjoy a new perspective on George Washington’s home.
