Coopering in the 18th Century

Join the Education team and Master Cooper Marshall Cheetz of Jamestown Cooperage, LLC, to explore the research behind the culture and economy of coopers and coopered containers and how they impacted the everyday lives of people in the 18th century, including George Washington, the enslaved community at Mount Vernon, the Continental Army, and others.

During the workshop, you will participate in hands-on activities, analyze primary sources, explore digital resources, and discuss how to bring the STEAM work behind coopering during the revolutionary era into your classrooms.

Gain confidence in integrating history and STEAM concepts in an interdisciplinary context to support student learning while building a network of local peers. Attend with a teaching partner or collaborative team to design learning experiences to take back to your classroom, department, grade level, and/or school.

The American Revolution & STEAM

As we approach the celebration of America's 250th anniversary in 2026, Mount Vernon will provide an additional opportunity for visitors to step back in time to the American Revolution through the Patriots' Path: A Revolutionary War Encampment. During this daily interpretation of what was life like for Continental soldiers and patriots during the Revolutionary War this year, we're excited to announce that this year's workshops will focus on the STEAM concepts behind the daily life of soldiers, military officers, and camp followers who traveled with the army.
