Lives Bound Together: Slavery at George Washington’s Mount Vernon explores the personal stories of the people enslaved at Mount Vernon while providing insight into George Washington’s evolving opposition to slavery.

This exhibit first opened to the public from 2016 - 2020 after years of research. Mount Vernon is now happy to share much of the contents of the exhibit online. Experiencing the exhibit in its physical space is very moving and impactful in a way a website is not. However, we wanted to share with as many people as possible the stories of the individuals who were enslaved here at Mount Vernon. 

In 2025, Mount Vernon opened a reimagined version of the Lives Bound Together exhibition within the historic greenhouse quarters. Much of the content from the physical exhibit can be found on the webpages listed below:
