General Kuroki Tamemoto (1844–1923) was a distinguished Japanese army commander. He was accompanied by Baron Matsuji Ijuin (1893–1944), an Imperial Japanese Navy officer. During their visit, they placed a wreath on the Tomb.
According to Mount Vernon’s director, “Never have I witnessed such exhibition of reverence as their [General Kuroki & Admiral Ijuin] silent but deeply impressive manner betokened. The demeanor of these distinguished foreigners might not have been so noticeable were it not that such degree of sentiment among our own people, if it exists, has never been shown”.
