Watch an Ancient Technique Come to Life

See and touch various replicas of historic items created with the Sprang technique, including the replica Braddock Sash. Try your hand at the braiding technique with guidance from the artist.

The Braddock Sash, once owned by Major General Edward Braddock, was passed down to his aide-de-camp, George Washington, in 1775.

The replica sash will be added to Mount Vernon’s collection along with the original.

Meet the Artist Behind the Making

Since the 1980s, Carol James has been exploring a wide, flat, braiding technique known in North America as finger weaving.

She has spent the past 30 years rediscovering textile forms that had been considered lost, resurrecting these ancient techniques and making them accessible to everyone through her publicationsbooks, and workshops
