Martha Washington's Devotion to Reading
Did you know that Martha Washington was devoted to reading every day?
She regularly retired to her room between 9 and 10 o'clock in the morning "for an hour of meditation reading and prayer and that hour no one was ever allowed to interfere with."
Throughout her entire life, she found pleasure and solace in reading. She read the Bible and other devotional literature for religious edification and novels and magazines for entertainment and instruction.
Martha was also known as a regular and active letter writer, and a collection of her surviving letters are housed in the collections of The George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon.
