Never has our mission to honor George Washington and his legacy been more important than now as we look forward to 2026 when we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of our nation. The upkeep of the Mansion is a pillar of our mission, which would not be possible without your support and generosity.

Yellow Room - Completed

The Yellow Room is the third of four bedrooms in the central core of the Mansion to be reinstalled according to the latest research on the Washingtons’ wallpaper, paint, and furniture. The new furnishing scheme represents the room’s appearance after the presidency, when it was fitted out with neoclassical gray-on-yellow wallpaper, new gilt-framed art prints, and the Mansion’s most elaborate bed, hung with gold silk and wool damask curtains, as befitting the "best bedchamber" in the Mansion.

Central Passage - In Progress

In 2018, Mount Vernon’s preservation team returning the woodwork in the Central passage to its original 1799 cream color, based upon updated paint analysis, and restored the gilded case for the Bastille key. In 2020, Mount Vernon continued the restoration by installing wallpaper along the staircase and throughout the landing on the second floor. The Central Passage was an important space for the Washington family, used to greet guests, and also as a space for entertaining.

Washington's Study - Future

Preservation work for the study will likely include conserving or replacing ceiling and wall plaster, repairing the woodwork and doors, restoring the floors, whitewashing the ceilings, repainting the woodwork, and any other necessary repairs that arise. The curatorial team will represent the room as an active office, in order to better convey to visitors the work done here by Washington and his secretaries.
