This 90-minute tour covers the history of Mount Vernon, the Washingtons, the enslaved, and the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association who has owned and operated the estate since 1858. The tour begins in the Mansion, which serves as an autobiography of George Washington—the architecture, function, and furnishings of each room reflected his status in society. As you walk through these rooms, observe meticulously restored interiors and original artifacts that represent the Washingtons' home in 1799.

Around the bowling green, experience the natural contours of Washington's landscape he designed that highlighted his wealth. Enjoy a stroll through the upper garden (a highlight to 18th-century visitors) and hear stories about the enslaved gardeners who maintained the grounds. On the backside of the greenhouse, you will look into reconstructed slave quarters where 15-20 people lived in each of four sleeping rooms.

The estate contains many reconstructed outbuildings where enslaved men and women worked. Watch a blacksmith create products used at the estate, as well as the spinning house, salt house, and smokehouse. At the stable and paddock, see Mount Vernon's heritage breed sheep, cattle, and horses that represent breeds Washington kept.

The experience concludes with a special wreath-laying ceremony at George Washington's Tomb, and a visit to the Slave Cemetery.
