Ingredients

  • Pastry
  • 2 1/2 cup flour
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening, cold
  • 3/4 cup milk

  • Apples
  • 6 medium-sized apples, peeled and cored
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 nutmeg

  • Syrup
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine

Directions

Pastry-Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening until it looks like small peas. Stir in the milk with a fork until mixture forms a ball. Turn out on pastry board or cloth fold and turn lightly. Wrap in waxed paper and chill.

Apples-Mix sugar, lemon, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Roll chilled pastry in six 4-inch squares. Place an apple on each square. Fill each core with the sugar, lemon, cinnamon, and nutmeg mixture. Fold over the points of the pastry and pinch corners together on top. Arrange in a large shallow pan.

Syrup-Boil sugar, water, lemon juice, and butter until it forms a thin syrup. Pour syrup over the pastry-wrapped apples and bake in a hot oven (425 degrees) for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to moderate (350 degrees) and bake 35 minutes. Serve hot. Can be served with cream.
