Prince Yoshihisa Tokugawa

Thursday, July 18, 1918

The prince was “so impressed with sentiments of admiration and with reverence for the memory of General Washington” that he made a personal gift of $1,000 to Mount Vernon “to be used for the purpose of purchasing some relic of General Washington which it would be appropriate to place in General Washington’s home.” That money was used to purchase a sash, originally owned by General Braddock and given by him on his deathbed to George Washington during the French and Indian War.

Prince Tokugawa pays his respects at Washington's tomb.
