It was a gift from Theophilus Alte of Prussia. The circumstances of the gift were mysterious: Atle's son Daniel was supposed to present the sword to Washington. Instead, it was forwarded to Mount Vernon only after being found at a tavern, having been pawned for $30. The engraved decoration shows a stylized figure of Washington crushing a lion and a unicorn, symbols of Great Britain.
