Travel Information

George Washington's Mount Vernon is located roughly 15 miles south of Washington DC along the banks of the Potomac River. You will find us at the southern end of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Hours of Operation

April through August:
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

March, September, and October:
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

November through February:
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Mount Vernon is open 365 days of the year!

The historic area of Mount Vernon remains open for approximately 30 minutes after the posted estate closing time.

The Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center remains open for one hour after the posted closing time.

Visitor parking is always free at Mount Vernon. There are parking lots on the east (Potomac River) and west sides of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, as you approach Mount Vernon.

On busy visitation days, these lots often fill up and are marked with "Lot Full" signs. If you are unable to park in the east or west lots, please follow the signs to our overflow parking lot, which will require you to turn into the Estate at the four way traffic stop and enter through one of our security gates. There are also spaces for RVs, motor coaches and trailers, either in the east lot or in the overflow lot.


New Shuttle to the Distillery & Gristmill
June 30 – July 13

We are making it easier than ever to visit George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill, which is located 2.7 miles from the estate, by offering a free shuttle for visitors.

A free shuttle will take visitors from the estate to the Distillery & Gristmill and will run on a 30-minute loop. Along the way, a brief audio tour will be provided . The shuttle service is included in your general admission ticket to Mount Vernon.

First pick up at the estate at 10 a.m. Last return to the Distillery at 4:30 p.m.

Public Transportation Options

Take Metro Rail's Yellow Line Train to Huntington Station in Virginia. Exit at the lower level (Huntington Avenue) of the station to catch a Fairfax Connector bus to Mount Vernon. Board the Fairfax Connector Bus #101 (Fort Hunt Line) at Huntington Station for a 20-minute trip (approximately 7.5 miles) to Mount Vernon's entrance gate.
