George Washington endorsed this account of his financial transactions with the prominent Alexandria merchant William Herbert. A frequent visitor to Mount Vernon, Herbert was an Irish immigrant who married Sarah Carlyle and later became the President of the Bank of Alexandria. Herbert signed this two page account and Washington endorsed it on the verso. The transactions recorded here date from March through July of 1775. In 1875, this document was recovered from the ruins of an old building destroyed by fire in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Unfortunately, the text is difficult to make out due to moderate burning and scorching.
