View Larger Sacred to the Memory of the Illustrious G. Washington

Circular composition set against a square background filled with a brick like pattern with a heavy border. The composition depicts two women, a man, and a monument to George Washington. The monument stands at the viewer’s right and consists of an obelisk atop a rectangular pedestal. The face of the obelisk displays (from top to bottom) a winged cherub’s head; a portrait of George Washington, after Gilbert Stuart, in an oval cartouche, with a laurel wreath below; and the words: “G.WASHINGTON” “There is / Rest in / HEAVEN.” The man and the woman nearest the monument hold kerchiefs to their faces. The woman at the viewer’s left is an allegorical figure representing Hope, with the index finger of her right hand pointing to the sky and an anchor resting against her leg. A weeping willow arches over the monument, while pine trees fill the remainder of the background; there is a cluster of grass and leaves at the bottom of the composition. The image is encircled by two concentric bands of floral ornament. At the center bottom of the inner border of these bands are the words “T Clarke Sculpt. 1801 Boston.”; below the band are the words “SACRED to the MEMORY of the ILLUSTRIOUS G.WASHINGTON.”

The engraving is housed in a gilt wood frame with old glass decorated with églomisé border.
