Description

Rectangular leather trunk with a domed lid featuring a sawtooth skirt. The lower front and side edges of the lid and the sides of the front, lid, and back, are outlined in strips of leather held down with a continuous line of brass tacks. Two strips of leather with brass tacks on the lid and front divide each into four panels. The rectilinear iron bail handle is secured to the top of the lid with cotter pins. A lock is mounted at the top center of the front panel of the trunk. The lid and base are held together by means of the continuous piece of leather which covers them. On the inside of the trunk, a space for a rectangular lock has been gouged out of the top center of the case back, and a narrow rectangular compartment has been gouged out above it on the back of the lid. Fragments of pages from a printed book, likely a Biblical commentary or prayerbook based on the text, remain on the inside of the lid and the case.
