Before marrying George Washington and serving as our nation's first first lady, Martha Dandridge Custis lived a fascinating life. She grew up in a two-story house called Chestnut Grove, about thirty-five miles from the colonial capital at Williamsburg as the daughter of a moderately successful planter. At the age of twenty, Martha married Daniel Parke Custis, one of the wealthiest men in Virginia, and had four children (only two would reach adulthood).

During this program, listen to young Martha Washington discuss her upbringing, her first marriage, and her children and ask her questions.
