Watch Historical Dressmaking

Mount Vernon’s historic costumer, Kathrin Breitt Brown, and journeywoman mantua maker Brooke Welborn of Burnley & Trowbridge, will complete a short sack and petticoat using hand stitching and 18th-century techniques. Short sacks, known in French as a Pet-en-l'air, were a less formal version of the fashionable sack back gown and were recognizable by the looser pleats in the back.

Witness the fine detail needed in creating clothing using historical methods, including cutting, fitting, and finishing.

Character interpreter Rachel Samson will use the finished ensemble for a variety of programs, including her depiction as Mary Wheatley.
