Tour the Gristmill

Tour a fully-functioning reconstruction of George Washington's Gristmill.

Washington constructed his gristmill in 1770-1771. It was capable of producing 5,000 to 8,000 pounds of flour and cornmeal a day.

Fresh Baked Bread

Justin Cherry of Half Crown Bakehouse will set up his bake oven at the Gristmill for the weekend of October 30 and 31, baking bread for sale to visitors using heirloom grains ground in Washington's Gristmill.  Many of these grains can be found in Mount Vernon records and were grown by Washington.

Bread and other 18th century baked goods will be available for purchase by the loaf or slice.
