Blacksmith Shop

From repairing tools to making hardware for construction projects, the enslaved and free blacksmiths at Mount Vernon made significant contributions to Washington's business ventures. Watch the blacksmiths at work as they demonstrate how to make items ranging from s-hooks to trivets.

12-Acre Field

Visit with Trades staff from Mount Vernon and Colonial Williamsburg to learn about metalworking in the 18th century. See the intricate work of the engraver, learn about the casting process used by the founder to create beautiful objects, and examine the coppersmith's method of creating objects from copper and brass sheets.

Join our Youth Programs team and learn about Washington's famous weathervane and how it became a symbol of the new nation. Grab a seat and create your own Dove of Peace weathervane to bring home.
