"We should never despair, our Situation before has been unpromising and has changed for the better, so I trust, it will again. If new difficulties arise, we must only put forth New Exertions and proportion our Efforts to the exigency of the times."

Letter to Major General Philip Schuyler | Tuesday, July 15, 1777

Editorial Notes

On July 5, 1777 General St. Clair and his troops were defeated at Fort Ticonderoga.  Schulyer informed Washington of this news and the grave situations of his soldiers, but confirmed that the troops were not imprisoned by British forces.  Washington responded, ensuring Schuyler that this is not the end of their war.
