"There is a Destiny which has the control of our actions, not to be resisted by the strongest efforts of Human Nature."

Letter to Mrs. George William Fairfax | Tuesday, September 12, 1758

Editorial Notes

Washington wrote this letter to Sarah Cary (Sally) Fairfax, the wife of his friend George William Fairfax, while he was serving in the French and Indian War.  Some historians believe that this letter, while giving the impression to prying eyes that the words were meant for his newly betrothed, Martha Dandridge Custis, were actually intended as a love note for Sarah Fairfax.
