• 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cup sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
  • 1 tablespoon orange rind
  • Pinch salt
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 cups sugar
  • Directions

    Cream together the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one by one, beating hard after each addition. Add the butter mik mixed with the soda alternately with the flour. Add the lemon extract, orange rind and salt. Grease tube pan and line with waxed paper. Grease the paper. Bake 1 hour at 375 degrees. Remove from Oven and lift from the pan. Spoon a mixture of the orange juice and sugar over the hot cake slowly to let it absorb.
