• 1 medium cabbage
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 2 cooking apples, peeled and sliced thin
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 to 3 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup boiling water
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Chopped dill weed to taste
  • Directions

    Cut cabbage in thin strips. Remove hard core. Wash and drain. In a saucepan, melt shortening and sautê onion for 5 minutes. Add the cabbage, apple slices, bay leaf, cloves, salt and boiling water. Cover and simmer over low heat for 1/2 hour. Add red wine vinegar and sugar and simmer 10 minutes longer. Taste and add more vinegar and sugar if necessary. Just before serving, season with dill weed.
