Music of the Dance

Perhaps the way that George Washington most enjoyed music was through dance. Washington's diaries are full of references to his attending and even hosting balls, which were among the chief social activities of the day. He is described as being "conspicuous" for his elegant dancing of the minuet and even drew the praise of his French officers who claimed his performance could not have been improved by a Parisian education.

During this experience, visit the greenhouse and learn some of Washington's favorite dances. Mount Vernon's historic trades staff will demonstrate three popular English country dances and have guests participate in the dance.
