A Patriots Path to Journey Back in Time

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolutionary War, we wanted to really engage visitors into what life was like for a Revolutionary War soldier at camp under General George Washington’s command.

With the support of our friends Tom and Char Hand at Americana Corner and YOU, Mount Vernon can offer an on-site Revolutionary War encampment using period appropriate reproduction tents and equipment for visitors to walk through and explore.

Living historians and historic interpreters will engage students, families, and interested visitors of all ages and backgrounds about life during the American Revolution, as well as specific battles and events during the Revolutionary War.

When visitors are fully immersed in history, the memories can last a lifetime!

Hands on History

The encampment will represent a single regiment within Washington’s army featuring 10 soldier tents, each equipped with items typically used by the rank-and-file soldier.

Stops on Patriots Path include:

  • A Camp Overview
  • Why Soldiers Chose to Fight
  • Daily Life of a Soldier

Each stop will feature equipment that visitors can pick up and handle, including clothing, personal hygiene items, and games. Visitors will also be able to see Revolutionary War-era muskets.

The laundry yard and cooking areas will highlight the important role camp followers played within the army, helping the soldiers. Visitors will have the opportunity to wash clothes and hang them to dry in the laundry yard and explore the various tools needed for cooking for many people.

The encampment celebrated its grand opening on March 8, 2025, and will be open 7 days a week throughout the commemorative period.

Special for 2025: At the end of the Patriots Path encampment experience, visitors can view the Revolutionary War movie in the Vaughan Lobby to see and better retain the history they just experienced on the Path.

Special Moments

An officer’s tent will also be equipped with a period map and historic document reproductions which will highlight specific battles fought throughout the War.

With your support, the Revolutionary Camp can continue into next year and these historic moment tents can feature information about events that happened precisely 250 years before:

2025: Battles of Lexington and Concord (1775)
2026: Trenton Campaign and Washington’s incredibly moving reading of the Declaration of Independence to his troops (1776)

More historic moments will be added as time progresses!
