George Washington's Distillery & Gristmill at Mount Vernon Located three miles from the estate on SR 235 South
Open April - October 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
George Washington’s Gristmill is considered the most authentically restored 18th-century mill in the country. Here, groups experience a private tour of the recently restored water-powered mill conducted by costumed millers who demonstrate its workings. Groups also have an opportunity to walk next door and observe as distillers operate five copper stills, mash tubs and a boiler to make rye whiskey, at George Washington’s Distillery, one of the largest such facilities of the 18th century. A museum on the second floor features a History Channel video, George Washington's Liquid Gold, and an exhibit, Spirits of Independence: George Washington and the Beginnings of the American Whiskey Industry.
When purchased with Estate admission, students pay $1.50 for both Distillery & Gristmill admission. The sites are located three miles from Mount Vernon; public transportation is not available.
