Interpreters in period clothing operate George Washington's Distillery and Gristmill, demonstrating how rye whiskey was made and how corn was ground.
A 16-foot waterwheel powers giant gears and millstones in Washington's Gristmill. Stone- ground cornmeal produced on site is available for purchase at the Gristmill Shop.
The newly opened Distillery was the largest in America during Washington's time and produced 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799, making it one of the most successful economic enterprises at Mount Vernon.
