Accessibility Information

Parking and Wheelchair Availability:

Designated accessible parking spaces are available at the front of the East and West Visitor Parking Lots on each side of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which are owned and maintained by the National Park Service, and at the front of Mount Vernon's overflow parking lot.  Transportation is not provided between the parking lots and the Ford Orientation Center, which is the main entrance to the Mount Vernon Estate.  For visitors with limited mobility, we suggest taking advantage of the curbside drop-off area on the traffic circle and nearby benches.

Standard, non-motorized wheelchairs and wheeled walkers are available free of charge inside the Ford Orientation Center on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visiting the Mansion and Historic Area:

  • Our 18th-century pathways in the historic area can be uneven and the estate includes some steep hills. An accessible path is available between the Ford Orientation Center, the Mansion, and the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center.  However, many of the pathways to other parts of the Estate are hilly and gravel-based, are subject to weather conditions, and can be difficult for those with mobility issues.
  • The first floor of the Mansion is accessible.  The upper floors of the Mansion can only be accessed by walking up stairs.  For visitors who are unable to walk up stairs, a Mansion tour handbook, which includes images of each room and a written interpretation of the Mansion (all three floors), is available upon request at the Mansion.
  • A shuttle, with lift, runs continuously between the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center and the George Washington: Pioneer Farmer site (April – October).
  • Mansion tours accessible for guests who are blind or have low vision are available with advance reservation (one week).  For more information, please contact us via phone at 703-780-2000 (ask for the Department of History Interpretation) or electronically by clicking here: ASK MOUNT VERNON
  • Mansion tours accessible for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing are available with advance reservation (one week).  For more information, please contact us via phone at 703-780-2000 (ask for the Department of History Interpretation) or electronically by clicking here: ASK MOUNT VERNON.

Visiting our Modern Facilities:

  • The Ford Orientation Center, Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, and the Mount Vernon Inn Complex are fully accessible for guests with wheelchairs and walkers.
  • Closed Captioning is available for all narrated video presentations in the Ford Orientation Center and Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center.

Other Amenities:

  • Alternate format guest maps are available upon request at the Ford Orientation Center.
  • Certified service animals or service animals-in-training are welcome.
