Structural Damage We Seek to Fix
Neale Nickels describes the fixes we seek to make to the walls, windows, and floor of the Nelly Custis Bedchamber.
The Nelly Custis Bedchamber was last restored in the early 1980s. After more than thirty years on display to over a million visitors a year, this beautiful and historic room is in great need of help.
With your donation, we can begin the task of repairing damage to the room, hanging new wallpaper, and installing period appropriate furniture and textiles.
Mount Vernon has always relied on the generosity of individuals like you to keep the legacy of George Washington alive, but the story of the children he raised as his own is also a part of his legacy which needs to be preserved. We know the walls can’t talk, but with your help, we can continue to tell to our many visitors the stories of love, life, and loss that took place during Nelly’s time in this elegant room. Please consider making a donation today.
