The American President Ornament Collection
Andrew Jackson Ornament
Andrew Jackson has a long political background from serving as Tennessee’s first Congressman in the House of Representatives, followed by a brief tenure in the U.S. Senate and as a Tennessee Supreme Court judge. His military career began during the Revolutionary War and continued through the War of 1812 where General Jackson earned the name “Old Hickory”. After becoming a national hero, Jackson returned to politics in 1823 launching an unsuccessful campaign for the presidency in 1824. Winning out the election in 1828, he defeated John Quincy Adams and later won a second term against Henry Clay. Driven by his belief in a strong union, Jackson expanded the power of the presidency throughout his two terms by being the first to actively exercise veto power to kill congressional bills. He rallied against congressional attempts to recharter the Bank of the United States, which he considered to serve the interests of the economically privileged.
