As a young widow, Martha Custis first met Colonel Washington at the time of the French and Indian War. They were engaged and married within a year. The earliest known portrait of George Washington - by Charles Willson Peale - and a miniature portrait by John Rammage, were executed at the request of Mrs. Washington. Both display Washington in uniform even though both were painted in peacetime. This hand-crafted 24kt gold finish depicts the portrait of General George Washington.
