| Abraham Lincoln Ornament |
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election as the first Republican president without the support of southern states. April 12,1861, marked the official start of the Civil War as Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter at Charleston Harbor. Lincoln’s first two years in office were fraught with a string of military disappointments and losses on the battlefield. The tide turned in July 1863 with union victories at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1863 Lincoln displayed his compassion on two separate occasions with his Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves in the confederacy, and again during the Gettysburg Address when he recognized the sacrifice of thousands and extended a conciliatory hand to the confederates. With the prospect of peace pervading the campaign, Lincoln won reelection in 1864. Just months later on April 14, 1865 Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC. 24 Karat Gold Finish and Fine Porcelain. Size 2 ½” x 3 ½”.
